Disney Appoints James Gorman to Lead Search for Bob Iger’s Successor

Bob Iger’s Successor

Hey Disney fans, grab your popcorn because Disney just made a power play that’s got everyone talking! In a move that screams “we mean business,” The Walt Disney Company has named James P. Gorman as the new Chair of its Succession Planning Committee. If you’re wondering who Gorman is, let me break it down for you. This guy is no Mickey Mouse. He’s a heavyweight in the corporate world, having recently served as the Chairman and CEO of Morgan Stanley. That’s right—he’s the guy who took Morgan Stanley through some major league transitions. Now, he’s been on the Disney Board since earlier this year, and it looks like they’re ready to tap into his deep well of leadership skills to lead the search for Bob Iger’s successor.

Mark Parker’s Confidence in Gorman’s Leadership

Mark Parker, the big cheese of Disney’s Board, is thrilled about this appointment. He stated, “James is a highly respected leader, and we’ve asked him to serve as the new Chair of the Succession Planning Committee given his deep succession planning experience and long-term strategic mentality. Succession planning is a top priority of the Board, and I am eager to continue collaborating with James on the Committee as we advance the important work we have already been doing to identify and prepare the next CEO of The Walt Disney Company.”

Translation? Disney is putting its future in the hands of someone who knows how to navigate the tricky waters of leadership change. Gorman’s role is critical, and Disney is betting big on his experience to guide them through what is arguably one of the most important decisions in their modern history.

The Power Trio: Gorman, Barra, and McDonald

It’s not just a one-man show, though. Gorman is joined by Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, and Calvin McDonald, CEO of Lululemon, on the Succession Planning Committee. Both are seasoned pros when it comes to managing leadership transitions in big-time companies. So, you’ve got a trio of powerhouse leaders steering the ship here, and they’re on a mission to find Disney’s next CEO. These folks aren’t just sitting around a conference table; they’re actively involved in identifying and grooming the next person to wear the Mickey ears at the top.

Why Succession Planning is a Big Deal for Disney

So, why all the fuss about succession planning? It all goes back to Bob Iger. Yeah, the Bob Iger who made Disney the entertainment juggernaut it is today. Under Iger, Disney didn’t just grow; it exploded. We’re talking the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox. The guy knows how to play the game, and he’s done it brilliantly for over a decade. But even Iger himself admits he can’t do this forever. That’s why the creation of the Succession Planning Committee back in January 2023 was such a big deal. After all, Iger’s unexpected return as CEO in late 2022 signaled that Disney needed a steady hand during a period of strategic shake-ups.

The Iger Legacy and the Quest for a Worthy Successor

Iger’s return was seen as a stabilizing force. It was like bringing the old coach back to lead the team one more time. But Iger knows he’s not the future—he’s the bridge to the future. Since his return, he’s made it clear that one of his main objectives is to ensure a smooth transition to the next Disney leader. This is where the Succession Planning Committee comes into play. They’re not just looking for someone who can manage day-to-day operations; they’re looking for a visionary who can continue to build on Iger’s legacy.

James Gorman’s Street Cred

Now, let’s circle back to James Gorman. What makes him the right guy for the job? Gorman’s got a resume that reads like a corporate playbook. He’s currently the Executive Chairman of Morgan Stanley, a role he’ll step down from in December 2024. Before that, he was the CEO, navigating Morgan Stanley through some pretty turbulent times. He’s got the chops for strategic leadership, and he’s not afraid to make the tough calls. Plus, his background at Merrill Lynch and McKinsey & Co. gives him a deep understanding of corporate strategy and governance. In short, Gorman knows what it takes to steer a massive ship through stormy waters and into calm seas.

Who Could Be the Next Disney CEO?

Let’s get to the big question: Who could be the next CEO of Disney? While the Succession Planning Committee is tight-lipped, we’ve got a few potential contenders in the mix. First up, there’s Dana Walden, a heavyweight in the entertainment world. She’s currently co-leading Disney’s entertainment division and has a proven track record. Then there’s Alan Bergman, another co-lead in entertainment, who has been with Disney for a while and knows the ins and outs of the company’s vast content empire.

But wait, there’s more! Josh D’Amaro, the guy running Disney’s parks division, is also a name being tossed around. He’s been instrumental in navigating the parks through the pandemic and coming out stronger on the other side. Last but not least, there’s Jimmy Pitaro, the chairman of ESPN. Pitaro’s leadership in sports entertainment and his experience with digital transformation make him a strong contender.

Wrapping It Up: Disney’s Future is Bright

So, there you have it. Disney’s search for Bob Iger’s successor is in full swing, and with James Gorman at the helm of the Succession Planning Committee, you can bet that the company is taking this process very seriously. Whether the next CEO comes from inside Disney’s ranks or is brought in from the outside, one thing is clear: Disney is committed to finding a leader who can carry on Iger’s legacy of innovation, creativity, and strategic growth.

The future of Disney is on the line, but with a dream team like Gorman, Barra, and McDonald steering the succession planning, Mickey and friends are in good hands. Stay tuned, folks—this is one saga you don’t want to miss!

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
