Mark your calendar: Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopening 2026 is officially set for April 8 at Magic Kingdom. After nearly eight months closed for one of the most comprehensive refurbishments in the attraction’s history, Space Rangers are reporting back for duty — and the ride coming back is dramatically different from the one that closed.
Quick Summary
- Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is reopening at Magic Kingdom on April 8, 2026 after an extended refurbishment.
- The ride is getting new handheld blasters, redesigned Star Command vehicles, and updated Buzz + Zurg projections in the hyperspace tunnel.
- The Buddy robot character from the Buzz Lightyear film is making an appearance inside the attraction.
- A new Space Ranger-themed onride photo includes scoring details and ranks like Astro Aviator and Planetary Pilot.
- The queue has been refreshed, and Easter eggs are hidden throughout for sharp-eyed fans.
- Lightning Lane will be available from day one, so grab your reservation early on opening day.
Disney closed the attraction in August 2025 to overhaul nearly every major system. New scenes. Redesigned vehicles. Upgraded blasters. Fully responsive gameplay tech. This isn’t a fresh coat of paint — it’s a ground-up rethink of how the ride works.
What’s New When Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Reopens
Meet Buddy: The New Pre-Show Character
Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar collaborated to create Buddy, a brand-new support robot who runs the opening sequence. Buddy’s job is to prep Space Rangers before they head into battle — running through system checks and encouragement. It’s a complete rework of the ride’s introduction, and it gives the attraction its own original character for the first time.
Handheld Blasters Replace Fixed Cannons
This is the change that will matter most to competitive riders. The original fixed blasters are gone. In their place: handheld blasters that you aim yourself, with vibration feedback, sound effects, and an always-on laser so you can actually track where you’re shooting. For anyone who has spent years trying to hit targets by memory, this is a massive upgrade.
Redesigned Vehicles with Onboard Scoring Screens
The ride vehicles have been completely redesigned with Star Command styling. Each vehicle now features onboard screens displaying your real-time score as you ride — no more waiting until the end to see how you did. You can watch your score climb (or not) in real time, which completely changes the competitive dynamic of the experience.
New Projection Tech in the Hyperspace Tunnel
For the first time ever, the hyperspace tunnel scene will feature projections of Buzz Lightyear and Emperor Zurg. This was previously a purely atmospheric section — now it’s actually part of the story being told.
Interactive Targets That Actually React
The old mechanical targets are out. Digital interactive targets are in, and they light up and visually react when you hit them. No more ambiguity about whether you scored or not. The switch to digital also opens the door to hidden targets and gameplay features that simply weren’t possible with the original system — which ties directly into the Easter eggs WDI has confirmed are hidden throughout the ride.
Easter Eggs, Queue Refresh, and Toy Story 5 Connections
Walt Disney Imagineering has confirmed that the refurbished attraction includes new Easter eggs for riders to discover. The queue has also been refreshed. And there are possible Toy Story 5 references woven into the experience — which, given that Toy Story 5 is currently in production at Pixar, is exactly the kind of storytelling bridge Disney has been building into its park attractions for years.
The digital target system is the key that unlocks all of this. Hidden elements and layered gameplay features require a system that can be updated and programmed — mechanical targets can’t do that. Expect the Easter egg hunt community to go absolutely wild when this reopens.
When Does Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Reopen?
April 8, 2026 is the official reopening date. If you have a Magic Kingdom trip planned around that window, this is worth building your day around. The attraction will almost certainly draw significant crowds in the first few weeks after reopening — especially once word spreads about just how different the experience is.
Plan accordingly: arrive early, use Lightning Lane if it’s available, and budget time for multiple rides. With handheld blasters and real-time scoring, reridability just went way up.
Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin 2026: The Bottom Line
This refurbishment is the real deal. New character, new blasters, new vehicles, new projection tech, interactive targets, Easter eggs, and a queue refresh — Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopening in 2026 is essentially a new attraction wearing a familiar name. To infinity and beyond never felt more literal.
