Bob Iger is writing the sequel to his Disney story. The former Disney CEO has announced a new book, One Last Time: Managing Crisis and Building Resilience at Disney, about his unexpected return to run the company in 2022. Written with Dan Schwerin, the Bob Iger book arrives in hardcover on March 2, 2027.
If you read The Ride of a Lifetime, this one picks up where that book left off. Here’s what we know about it and why parks fans might want to pay attention.
Quick Summary
- Bob Iger’s new book is One Last Time: Managing Crisis and Building Resilience at Disney, written with Dan Schwerin.
- It’s a 256-page hardcover priced at $34, releasing March 2, 2027.
- The book covers Iger’s return as Disney CEO in late 2022, less than a year after he retired.
- It follows his first book, The Ride of a Lifetime, published in 2019.
- Iger handed the CEO role to Josh D’Amaro in March 2026 and retires from Disney on December 31, 2026.
What the Book Is About
One Last Time focuses on Iger’s second run as CEO. The Disney board called him back in November 2022, less than a year into his retirement. According to the book’s description, he returned to find finances shaky, leadership flagging, morale dangerously low, and the brand tarnished. His stated goal was to put a failed succession behind him and get Disney back on firm footing.
The book also looks at the bigger picture for the entertainment industry at the time. Movie theaters had been weakened by the pandemic, traditional television was fading, and audiences were shifting to streaming and short-form video. The description puts it bluntly, saying legacy media everywhere “was being split up, getting swallowed by other companies, or simply running itself into the ground.”
Iger frames his second stint as one that required a different kind of leadership. The book is built around a few central questions:
- How do you lead through adversity?
- How do you regain the trust of employees, customers, and shareholders?
- How do you build a new strategy for a new era?
The publisher describes it as “the sometimes bumpy, never boring journey” to reconnect Disney with its core values while building a new foundation.
Iger’s Second Term at a Glance
When Iger came back, he restructured the company quickly and set four priorities: improving the quality and economics of the film studios, making streaming profitable, positioning ESPN as the top digital sports destination, and growing Disney Experiences, the division that includes the parks.
During his second term, Iger oversaw:
- Disney’s largest-ever parks expansion
- Streaming reaching profitability
- A succession process that ended with Josh D’Amaro becoming CEO on March 18, 2026
Iger now serves as a Senior Advisor and board member until he retires on December 31, 2026.
Why Parks Fans Should Care
Most business memoirs don’t have much to say about your next Disney World trip. This one might. The parks were central to Iger’s second term. The massive expansion now under construction, including Tropical Americas, Monstropolis, and new resorts, was greenlit on his watch, and the person he handed the company to, Josh D’Amaro, came from running the parks.
If you’ve ever wondered why Disney made the choices it did on ticket prices, Lightning Lane, or which projects got funded, the book may offer some of Iger’s reasoning. Just keep in mind that it’s his account of events, written by the person at the center of them.
We’d also be curious to see how much of the book covers the decision-making behind the parks investments versus the streaming and studio side. The description leans more toward company-wide strategy than specific park projects.
Honors on the Way Out
The book announcement comes during a farewell year for Iger. He was recently named a Disney Legend and received a Main Street window at Disneyland. The window reads “New Century Builders, Robert A. Iger, Chief Architect” with the phrase “Looking Forward to Your Tomorrow.”
Another Side of the Story
Iger isn’t the only former Disney CEO with a book about this era. Bob Chapek, who succeeded Iger in 2020 and was replaced by him in 2022, has his own account out, and Chapek’s new book doesn’t hold back on Bob Iger. If you’re interested in Disney’s leadership drama, reading both will give you two very different versions of the same few years.
