The original BDX Droids used 3D-printed parts, but those didn’t hold up well in the Florida heat and humidity. So Disney swapped them for milled components that can survive the sun, sweat, and storms.

That means more consistent performances, fewer breakdowns, and better guest interactions—rain or shine.

2. Better Movement on Outdoor Terrain

Florida parks aren’t flat or predictable. So Disney upgraded how the droids move, giving them better balance control and stability.

They’ve been trained to walk on uneven ground, even when kids run up to them or the pavement slopes. This makes them reliable outside, not just inside.

3. More Personality, More Reactions

Working with Disney Live Entertainment, Imagineers added new behavior scripts that allow droids to react with a wider range of emotions and responses.

Whether it’s excitement, confusion, or a little attitude, the goal is to make you forget it’s a robot and believe it’s a living character.

How Do the BDX Droids Work?

Let’s break it down:

• Disney uses reinforcement learning to train the droids in digital simulations.
• They learn to follow movements that match the animation cues created by Disney artists.
• That means every blink, head tilt, or reaction is tied directly to how the character should feel in the moment.

And it works.

Disney’s Associate Lab Director of Robotics, Moritz Bächer, told TechRadar:

“We basically take animation as an input and make sure that our robots know how to best follow these inputs.”

Even better, parts of their movements—like antenna wiggles or blinking—are fully autonomous. But they also use joystick-controlled systems, which operators use to interact with guests in real time. These controls have been upgraded too, allowing for smoother and more natural movement.

Guest Interaction: What to Expect

Here’s where it gets exciting.

These droids don’t just walk around and wave—they can react in real-time to guests. A smile, a wave, a compliment… they pick up on it and respond with character.

Operators use tools to create personalized, believable moments with guests. So no two interactions will be the same.

“You don’t build technology for the sake of technology,” Bächer said. “We build Disney technology to create next-generation characters… so that you don’t see the mechanical systems any longer — you see just a believable robotic character.”

Even better, these droids are tested to handle challenging conditions, like rocking ship decks on Disney Cruise Line or sudden guest movements in the parks.

“We not only simulate flat terrain and uneven terrain, but we also push these robots in the simulation with random forces in all directions,” Bächer explained.

Translation? These little guys are ready for everything—including your toddler trying to hug one.

Where to See Them: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios

The first place guests will see the upgraded BDX Droids is Disney’s Hollywood Studios, specifically in Galaxy’s Edge.

This makes perfect sense. The Star Wars setting is all about immersion, and these droids are the next step in making you feel like you’re really part of that galaxy.

They’re expected to roll out later in 2025 and will likely start in controlled areas before being integrated more widely.

Disney’s Bigger Plan for Robotics
