Working with Disney Live Entertainment, Imagineers added new behavior scripts that allow droids to react with a wider range of emotions and responses.

Even better, parts of their movements—like antenna wiggles or blinking—are fully autonomous. But they also use joystick-controlled systems, which operators use to interact with guests in real time. These controls have been upgraded too, allowing for smoother and more natural movement.

Operators use tools to create personalized, believable moments with guests. So no two interactions will be the same.
“You don’t build technology for the sake of technology,” Bächer said. “We build Disney technology to create next-generation characters… so that you don’t see the mechanical systems any longer — you see just a believable robotic character.”
Even better, these droids are tested to handle challenging conditions, like rocking ship decks on Disney Cruise Line or sudden guest movements in the parks.
“We not only simulate flat terrain and uneven terrain, but we also push these robots in the simulation with random forces in all directions,” Bächer explained.
Translation? These little guys are ready for everything—including your toddler trying to hug one.
Where to See Them: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios
The first place guests will see the upgraded BDX Droids is Disney’s Hollywood Studios, specifically in Galaxy’s Edge.
This makes perfect sense. The Star Wars setting is all about immersion, and these droids are the next step in making you feel like you’re really part of that galaxy.
They’re expected to roll out later in 2025 and will likely start in controlled areas before being integrated more widely.
