Hey Universal Vacationers! The countdown to Epic has officially begun! Universal Orlando Resort’s highly anticipated fourth theme park – Universal Epic Universe – will officially open on May 22, 2025, unlocking the portals to five astounding worlds that will bring to life extraordinary adventures that go beyond guests’ wildest imaginations. And, rumors are already swirling around the second phase of the park and the potential for a The Creature From The Black Lagoon attraction.
What Is Dark Universe?
One of the universes is Dark Universe. Set in a fictional town of Darkmoor, this fog-laden village is where the air is thick with the essence of mystery and legends of the undead. As Pete Carsillo, senior creative director, articulates the vision behind Darkmoor: “We’ve merged timeless stories in a modern setting, where new tales emerge amidst these iconic creatures.”
When Epic Universe opens, guests will experience two thrilling attractions in the Dark Universe:
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment – In the heart of Darkmoor stands the imposing Frankenstein Manor, where Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, a descendant of the infamous Henry Frankenstein, conducts her audacious experiments. Here, in the bowels of the manor, you’ll embark on the dark ride Monsters Unchained. Witness Victoria’s bold attempts to rehabilitate legendary monsters like Dracula, which, as expected, go horrifically awry.
- Curse of the Werewolf – Bordering Darkmoor is a mysterious forest, home to Curse of the Werewolf, a dizzying family spinning coaster. Here, the Guild of Mystics, led by the enigmatic seer Maleva, warns of a lurking lycanthropic curse. This vibrant and perilous ride through werewolf-infested woods promises an adrenaline-packed journey.
Is a Black Lagoon Attraction Coming?
Even though Epic Universe is still months away from its official opening, it doesn’t mean plans for expansion are not already underway. Within Dark Universe, there’s a spot marked for the second phase of the park. The larger expansion pad (highlighted in yellow) is located behind the Curse of the Werewolf. For a sense of scale, the show building for Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is expected to be the marquee attraction within Dark Universe, located at the far right in the park layout.
So, what new attraction or experience could fill that space? While nothing has been officially announced, rumors are swirling, and theme park fans are abuzz.
The Origins of the Creature From The Black Lagoon Attraction Rumor
When it comes to theme park rumors, especially those involving major players like Disney and Universal, many start with an existing or iconic intellectual property (IP). Just like the whispers of a new Wicked Land over at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, the rumor of a Creature From the Black Lagoon attraction is tied to a classic monster movie.
At the time of writing, James Wan is currently developing a remake of the iconic 1954 monster movie, Creature From the Black Lagoon. You might recognize James Wan from his work on Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. To say that James knows how to film an underwater adventure would be an understatement.
Based on the current development schedule, the new The Creature From the Black Lagoon movie would be on track for a 2027 release. This timeline coincides with Universal’s plan for the second phase of Epic Universe. Additionally, a Creature From the Black Lagoon attraction would be a natural fit for Dark Universe and according to Jim Hill of Jim Hill Media, something to “keep and eye on”. But, what kind of experience could this attraction offer?
What Could The Creature From The Black Lagoon Attraction Look Like?
Given that the movie revolves around water—after all, it’s set in a Black Lagoon—a water-based attraction makes a lot of sense. Universal Creative has a history of developing iconic water-based attractions. Think back to the legendary JAWS attraction (which has since been replaced by Diagon Alley).
While this is purely speculative, it’s easy to imagine an attraction where guests set sail in the Black Lagoon and encounter the Creature. A dark and thrilling boat ride through misty waters, perhaps with encounters that make you feel the creature’s presence, would align well with the eerie atmosphere of Dark Universe and the Darkmoor Village.
Why It’s Still a Rumor
For now, we should treat this as just a rumor, especially since the remake of the movie is still in development. History shows that previous attempts to remake this classic film have often stalled or been abandoned. Yet, a Creature From the Black Lagoon attraction might not necessarily require a new movie to become a reality.
As Universal has demonstrated with Dark Universe, they are willing to bring classic monsters to life in the parks, even if there’s no recent movie to back them up. The Werewolf and Frankenstein-based experiences in Dark Universe prove that the timeless appeal of these creatures is enough to draw in guests.
Final Thoughts: Will We See The Creature From Black Lagoon at Epic Universe?
If the rumors hold any weight, the addition of a Creature From the Black Lagoon attraction in Epic Universe’s Dark Universe could become a highlight of the park’s second phase. The expansion would complement the spooky and atmospheric setting of Darkmoor and provide an adventure that dives deep into the legend of this classic monster.
Until Universal makes an official announcement, all we can do is speculate and dream about what’s to come. But one thing is for sure: Universal’s Epic Universe has already captured the imagination of fans, and the thought of a The Creature From the Black Lagoon attraction only adds to the excitement.
Stay tuned for more updates as we keep a close eye on Universal’s plans for this potential of The Creature From The Black Lagoon attraction.
