If you’ve only ever seen the Expedition Everest Yeti as a split-second strobe flash, now is your chance to get a real look. The Yeti scene at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a new lighting setup that keeps the figure visible for your entire pass, ending nearly 20 years of “Disco Yeti” darkness.
It comes shortly after Joe Rohde said the Expedition Everest Yeti is being replaced, and after Disney announced at D23 that the Yeti will move again. Here’s what changed and why it matters.
Quick Summary
- The Expedition Everest Yeti scene now uses a deep blue light.
- The Yeti stays visible the entire time your train passes.
- The strobe effect is still running, but the scene is no longer pitch black between flashes.
- Disney announced at D23 that the Yeti will move again, and Joe Rohde has said he believes Disney will replace the figure.
- Disney hasn’t shared a timeline for the Yeti work or announced a closure.
What’s Different About the Yeti Scene
For nearly 20 years, the Yeti scene has run in what fans call “Disco Yeti” mode. The scene stays almost completely dark, and a strobe light gives you brief flashes of the figure as your train passes. Most riders only catch a split-second look.
The new setup changes that:
- The scene is now lit in a deep blue light.
- The Yeti stays visible the entire time you pass.
- The strobe effect is still running, but the scene isn’t pitch black between flashes anymore.
You can now see the full figure, the broken track, and the surrounding rockwork in a way that hasn’t been possible on a normal ride-through for years.
Why Is the Lighting Changing?
Disney hasn’t said why it updated the lighting before work on the animatronic begins. There are a couple of possibilities:
- Imagineers could be testing new lighting for the updated scene.
- It could be a last chance for guests to see the current figure before it’s removed.
It’s also possible the new lighting simply makes the scene easier for crews to inspect as they prepare for the work ahead. Either way, it’s a noticeable change for anyone who has ridden Expedition Everest many times.
Repair or Replace?
Joe Rohde, the lead Imagineer behind Expedition Everest, recently said on the Welcome Home Podcast that he believes Disney will replace the Yeti rather than repair the existing figure. We covered his comments when Rohde said the Yeti is being replaced.
Disney hasn’t confirmed which approach it’s taking. What we do know from D23 is that the plan is for the Yeti to move again, which is the thing fans have wanted since the “Disco Yeti” days began.
How to See the Yeti on Your Next Visit
If you’re visiting Animal Kingdom soon, this may be your best look at the original Yeti figure. There’s no word on how long the new lighting will stay in place, so don’t wait if you want to see it.
A few tips:
- Ride more than once. The scene goes by quickly, and a second ride lets you take it in. Keep your eyes up and ahead as your train races backward into the final section of the mountain, since that is when you pass the Yeti.
- Ride at night. The rest of the coaster feels different after dark, and the Yeti scene is a great finale.
- Snap a photo afterward, not during. Phones and cameras need to be secured on the ride, so enjoy the view and save the photos for the Himalayan village outside.
Will Expedition Everest Close for the Yeti Work?
Disney hasn’t announced a closure for Expedition Everest or shared a timeline for the Yeti work. Bringing back a moving Yeti is a big job, so a refurbishment is likely at some point, but there’s no date yet.
If you’re planning a trip around Expedition Everest, check the refurbishment schedule closer to your visit. We’ll share news as soon as Disney announces dates.
Why Fans Care So Much
When Expedition Everest opened in 2006, the Yeti was one of the most advanced animatronics Disney had ever built, designed to lunge toward riders at the climax. Not long after, it stopped moving in that full way, and the strobe effect took over. Seeing the Yeti come back to life has been at the top of Disney fans’ wish lists for years, which is why even a lighting change gets attention.
The Bottom Line
The Expedition Everest Yeti now sits in a deep blue light and stays visible between strobe flashes, giving you the clearest look at the figure in nearly 20 years. Disney hasn’t explained the change, but it comes as the company prepares to make the Yeti move again, possibly with a brand-new figure. Ride soon if you want to see the original Yeti before the work begins.
