Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has three new residents. Three nyala calves have been born at the resort, and while they’re backstage bonding with their mothers for now, Disney says guests may be able to spot them on the savanna in the coming weeks.
If you have an Animal Kingdom Lodge stay coming up, this is a great reason to spend a little extra time at the savanna overlooks.
Quick Summary
- Three nyala calves have been born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
- The calves are currently backstage, bonding with their mothers.
- Disney says guests may be able to see them on the savanna in the coming weeks.
- Nyala are spiral-horned antelope native to southern Africa.
- Nyala are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, though habitat loss still affects wild populations.
Meet the New Nyala Calves
The photos Disney shared show the newborns in a backstage area, staying close to their mothers. One calf stands between its mother’s legs, two stand side by side, and another rests on hay while its mother nuzzles it. It’s an early bonding period, and the animal care team keeps calves behind the scenes until they’re ready to join the herd out on the savanna.
Disney hasn’t shared names or an exact date for when the calves will make their savanna debut. “The coming weeks” is the best guidance for now.

What Are Nyala?
Nyala are spiral-horned antelope native to southern Africa, where they’re found across Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. They usually live in dense woodland and thickets close to water.
One of the most interesting things about nyala is how different males and females look:
- Females are chestnut brown with bold white stripes along their sides.
- Males are darker, with longer shaggy coats and long, twisted horns.
Young calves look a lot like the females, with that warm brown coloring and white striping, which is what you’ll see in Disney’s photos.
Nyala are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, meaning they aren’t considered threatened right now. But habitat loss continues to put pressure on wild populations, which is part of why accredited animal care programs like Disney’s play a role in conservation.
Where to Look for Them at Animal Kingdom Lodge
Animal Kingdom Lodge is built around savannas, where giraffes, zebras, antelope, and birds roam within view of the resort. Once the calves are out, here are your best chances to see them:
- Savanna overlooks: The resort has viewing areas facing the savannas, and they’re the easiest spot to watch the animals.
- Savanna-view rooms: If you booked a savanna-view room, you may be able to watch from your own balcony.
- Ask a cast member: Animal Kingdom Lodge cast members and animal team members often know which animals have been out and where they were last spotted.
- Visit early or late: Many animals are more active in the cooler morning and evening hours.
Keep in mind that the calves will join the herd on their own timeline, so there’s no guarantee they’ll be out during your stay.
Dining With a Savanna View
One of the easiest ways to combine a meal with animal spotting is Sanaa at Kidani Village. The restaurant’s windows look out over the savanna, so you can watch giraffes and antelope wander past while you eat, and there’s a good chance you’ll see some of the resort’s hoofstock during a lunch or dinner.
Disney has also offered guided savanna experiences at Animal Kingdom Lodge over the years, which take guests closer to the animals than the public overlooks. Availability and pricing change, so if you’re interested, check with Disney or the resort before your trip to see what’s currently offered.
Not Staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge?
You don’t have to be a resort guest to enjoy the lobby and some public areas. If you’re visiting for a meal at one of the resort’s restaurants, give yourself extra time to stop at a savanna overlook before or after. It’s one of the most relaxing ways to spend an hour at Walt Disney World.
Why Births Like This Matter
New animal births are always fun to see, but they’re also a sign that the animals are healthy and well cared for. Disney’s animal care teams at Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Lodge are part of broader efforts to support wildlife and conservation, and successful births help maintain healthy populations in human care.
The Bottom Line
Three nyala calves have arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. They’re backstage with their mothers for now, but Disney says they could appear on the savanna in the coming weeks. If you’re staying at the resort or stopping by for a meal, check the savanna overlooks and ask a cast member whether the calves have made their debut. With a little patience, you might catch a glimpse of the newest members of the herd.
