Disneyland Paris has one of the most beautiful castles in the Disney world, and it just got a birthday present. The Sleeping Beauty Castle bridge refurbishment is complete, and it lands right as the castle turns 35.
This wasn’t a quick paint job. Disney says the work started with the bridge’s structure and went all the way up to the surface you walk on. There’s new granite paving made from 2,735 individual pieces, rebuilt limestone balusters, a new tropical timber deck on the drawbridge, and a brand-new compass rose at the center inspired by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.
Thousands of guests cross this bridge every day, so it’s easy to take for granted. But if you’re visiting Disneyland Paris soon, it’s worth slowing down on your way into Fantasyland. Here’s everything Disney rebuilt, the story behind the new compass rose, and how it ties into the castle’s 35th anniversary.
Quick Summary

What Disney Rebuilt in the Sleeping Beauty Castle Bridge Refurbishment
Disney says the renovation made it possible to restore the whole structure, not just the surface. Here’s what changed.
The structure
The work began with the bones of the bridge. Disney rebuilt the structure that supports the decorative elements, along with the arches, corbels, and decorative spandrels. It also replaced the wooden balustrade posts. The drawbridge now has a new deck made of tropical timber.
The granite paving
The old stamped concrete deck is gone. In its place is granite paving, which Disney says is easier to maintain, better looking, and comfortable for guests to walk on.
Laying it wasn’t simple. Disney describes the layout as a jigsaw puzzle, with 2,735 individual pieces fitted to follow the bridge’s arched shape.
The limestone balusters
Disney completely rebuilt the natural stone balusters, which are made from Champagny limestone. It then treated them with a waterproofing agent to protect them from the spray of the fountains below.
The stonework on the sides
To recreate the look of stone on the bridge’s sides and under its arches, the team sprayed synthetic stone paste onto a metal framework. Artisans then hand-sculpted the relief patterns.
Each piece was hand-painted in five different shades, plus light and dark tones, to match the natural variation of the castle’s stones. Patina work, painting, and new landscaping finished the job.
Stefano Servi, Stage Architect at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris, said the goal was to “restore the bridge to its former glory” while keeping the details that give it character. Disney also says experts in historic monument restoration helped care for the castle.

The New Compass Rose: A Nod to the Three Good Fairies
The standout new detail is a compass rose of natural stone and brass inlays at the center of the bridge. It’s packed with Sleeping Beauty storytelling.
- Merryweather’s blue and Flora’s red branches point in opposite directions. That’s a nod to their famous argument over the color of Aurora’s dress.
- Fauna’s green arc sits between them, representing her role as the peacemaker and creating a transition between the two branches.
- A brass medallion shows Aurora’s crown surrounded by thorns.
- A brass fleur-de-lis marks north.
That fleur-de-lis is a callback. When Disneyland Park opened, four brass letters marked the cardinal directions on the bridge. Those letters were removed during the 2010 refurbishment. The new compass rose brings that idea back in a more storybook way.
A specialist artisan handcrafted the finishes on the three brass layers to create subtle depth and shine.
My tip: The compass rose is right in the main walkway, so it’s easy to walk over without noticing. Visit early in the morning or late at night when the bridge is less crowded, and look down. It makes a great photo.
35 Years of Sleeping Beauty Castle
Disney unveiled Sleeping Beauty Castle on October 12, 1991, at an event called Rendez-Vous au Château, attended by press, Cast Members, and their families. The park itself opened to the public the following spring.
Since then, Disney says the castle has received regular maintenance, renovation, and enhancement work. The goal is to keep its appearance consistent while letting some details evolve over time.
The castle’s last major project was a 12-month refurbishment that wrapped up in time for the resort’s 30th anniversary. Disney announced that project with a themed tarp covering the castle, and the work included 41,200 gold leaves applied by hand.
The bridge refurbishment is the next chapter in that care, and the timing for the 35th anniversary makes it feel like a celebration.
What This Means for Your Disneyland Paris Visit
- The bridge is open. You can walk across it and see the new details now.
- Look for the small stuff. The compass rose, the hand-painted stone, and the new balusters reward a slower walk.
- Plan your castle photos. The new granite and stonework make the bridge an even better foreground for castle shots.
- Go early or late. The bridge is one of the busiest paths in the park. Mornings and evenings give you room to stop and look.
The Bottom Line
The Sleeping Beauty Castle bridge refurbishment at Disneyland Paris is finished, just in time for the castle’s 35th anniversary. Disney rebuilt the structure, laid 2,735 granite pieces, restored the Champagny limestone balusters, and added a stunning compass rose inspired by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.
