Savi’s Workshop at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge just got its most meaningful update since it opened — a fourth hilt theme, and a set of blade effects that apply to every lightsaber built there.
If you have been on the fence about a $274.99 lightsaber, the pitch changed.
Quick Summary
- A fourth hilt theme has been added: Protection and Defense, with white and gold finishes and High Republic era Jedi iconography
- Every build in every theme now includes new effects: thermal cutting, spinning, deflection, upgraded audio, and smoother blade activation
- Pair a build with a “cracked” kyber crystal and a flick of the wrist switches the blade between light and dark side colors
- Price remains $274.99 per lightsaber plus tax
- Advance reservations are recommended
- Available at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland
The New Hilt Theme
Savi’s Workshop has run on three hilt themes since it opened. Protection and Defense makes four. Here is the full set, with what each one is built around:
- Peace and Justice — salvaged scraps tied to fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships, honoring Republic-era guardians
- Power and Control — styled after dark side warriors, with parts said to come from the Sith homeworld
- Elemental Nature — built from materials like Brylark wood and Cartusion whale bone
- Protection and Defense — the new one, with white and gold finishes and Jedi iconography from the High Republic era
The High Republic framing is the interesting part. That era has been the center of Lucasfilm’s publishing push for years, and this is the first time Savi’s has pointed a build theme directly at it. White and gold is also a genuinely different look from the other three, which lean heavily on weathered metal, dark finishes, and organic materials.

The Effects Upgrade Applies to Everyone
This is the bigger story, and it is easy to miss underneath the new theme.
Every build — any hilt theme, any crystal color — now includes:
- A thermal cutting effect
- A spinning effect
- Deflection effects
- Upgraded audio
- Smoother blade activation
Those are not cosmetic. Deflection and thermal cutting effects respond to how you move the blade, which turns the lightsaber from a prop that lights up into something closer to an interactive toy for adults.
The wrist-triggered color change is the standout. Pair your build with a “cracked” kyber crystal and a flick of the wrist switches the blade between the light and dark sides of the Force. One lightsaber, two allegiances, no swapping crystals.
How the Build Works
If you have never done it, here is the shape of the experience.
Savi’s Workshop sits in Black Spire Outpost. A group called the Gatherers leads you into a hidden workshop stocked with salvaged parts collected from across the galaxy. You build your own lightsaber under their guidance and power it with a kyber crystal. The in-story reason you are asked to keep the shop’s location quiet is that the First Order is still looking for it.
You meet a Gatherer outside, choose one of the four hilt themes, and get a cloisonné pin marking your selection. Then you pick a crystal color:
- Blue — carried by Obi-Wan Kenobi
- Green — carried by Luke Skywalker and Master Yoda
- Violet — carried by Mace Windu
- Red — carried by Darth Vader, Darth Maul and Asajj Ventress
Then you assemble the hilt from a box of parts matched to your theme and pin:
- 1 hilt
- 4 sleeves (pick 2)
- 2 emitters (pick 1)
- 2 pommel caps (pick 1)
- 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)
Leftover parts go back into Savi’s inventory — they are not included with your lightsaber, which surprises people. Once the hilt is done, the Gatherers attach a 31-inch blade and the build is complete.
The Details That Trip People Up
Price: $274.99 per lightsaber, plus tax. Full payment is due at booking.
One per builder. One lightsaber per builder, per experience.
The build area holds two people. The builder plus one guest, and at least one person in the party must be 14 or older.
Your guest cannot also build. A guest accompanying the builder may not build a lightsaber themselves. If two people in your group want one, that is two reservations.
Age recommendation is 5 and up.
A carrying case is included. Worth knowing before you buy a separate one.
No discounts. Lightsabers are nonrefundable and not eligible for Annual Passholder or other discounts. This is one of the few things on property where passholder status gets you nothing.
Reservations are recommended. You can book at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Walk-up availability exists but should not be your plan.
Should You Upgrade?
If you already built one, the honest answer is that there is no upgrade path announced — the new effects come with new builds. Whether a second lightsaber is worth $274.99 for a thermal cutting effect and a wrist-flick color change depends entirely on how much you liked the first one.
If you have never built one, this is a better version of the experience than it was a month ago, for the same price. The color-change crystal in particular is the kind of feature that makes the thing fun to actually use rather than display.
You can also add customization pieces at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities if you want to keep going.
The Bottom Line
A fourth hilt theme is nice. The effects package landing across every build is the part that actually changes the value of Savi’s Workshop.
Same $274.99, more lightsaber. Book ahead.
