New WDI Permit Filed Near Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Piston Peak construction site at Magic Kingdom

A new Walt Disney Imagineering permit has an address that doesn’t exist yet, and that’s exactly why it’s interesting. The filing lists 1610 Magic Kingdom Dr, an address that doesn’t currently appear in the address database, with the closest known address being Haunted Mansion at 1600 Magic Kingdom Dr.

PCL Construction is the listed contractor, with a scope of general construction. A brand-new address usually means a brand-new building, and the location points directly at the Piston Peak work already underway.

Here’s what the permit says, what the aerials and the D23 model suggest it is, and where Piston Peak stands right now.

Quick Summary

  • What was filed: A Notice of Commencement from Walt Disney Imagineering
  • Address: 1610 Magic Kingdom Dr, which isn’t in the address database yet
  • Nearest known address: Haunted Mansion at 1600 Magic Kingdom Dr
  • Contractor: PCL Construction
  • Scope: General construction
  • Likely location: A cleared treeline area next to Haunted Mansion
  • Best guess at what it is: A restroom building shown in that spot on the Piston Peak scale model

Why a New Address Matters

Disney assigns addresses to buildings. When a permit lists an address that isn’t in the database, it generally means the structure doesn’t exist yet.

That’s the difference between this filing and a typical refurbishment permit. Work on an existing building carries that building’s address. A new number suggests a ground-up structure.

Where It Points

The location may point to a cleared area of treeline next to Haunted Mansion. That area is visible in recent aerial photos, and it showed up in the Piston Peak scale model shown at D23 in August, where a building with restroom signage was visible in that exact spot.

So the most likely answer is the least glamorous one: a new restroom building serving the Piston Peak area.

Before you groan, consider that restroom capacity is one of the most common complaints about new lands. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Pandora both drew criticism for it. Building facilities into the plan early is a sign that Disney learned something. According to Jim Hill of Jim Hill Media, this new restroom at the Magic Kingdom to be on the larger end to handle the sizable increase in crowds coming to see Piston Peak and Villains Land. Based on its location, it would make a lot of sense, as this address would be the ‘starting point’ to see both of these upcoming lands.

Piston Peak Construction Status

The permit comes as work continues across the broader Piston Peak site:

  • A tower crane recently arrived on site
  • Retaining wall construction continues along the perimeter nearest Frontierland and Liberty Square

A tower crane is a meaningful milestone. Cranes of that size go up when vertical construction is about to begin, and they typically stay for a long stretch of the build. If you’re visiting Magic Kingdom this fall, expect it to be visible from parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square.

What’s Actually Coming to Piston Peak

Disney revealed the two Piston Peak attractions at D23 in August:

No opening date has been announced. Given that vertical construction is only starting now, this is a multi-year project, and anyone promising you a date is guessing.

What This Means for Your Magic Kingdom Day

Construction of this scale affects the guest experience in predictable ways. Here’s what to plan for:

  • Visual intrusion. A tower crane and construction walls are visible from parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square. If pristine photos matter to you, plan your angles
  • Noise during the day. Most heavy work happens during park hours, and sound carries across that side of the park
  • Walkway changes. Retaining wall work near the perimeter can shift paths with little notice
  • The Haunted Mansion is unaffected. It continues operating normally, and the queue experience hasn’t changed

On the lesser side, once in a while the construction can impact park opening. On a recent trip to the Magic Kingdom, we were held at security for a longer time due to a vehicle breaking down while exiting the park after overnight work. Ultimately, it did not impact park opening, but it did cause longer lines and wait times at security. In speaking with a cast member, they said this rarely happens, but it’s not something to be alarmed by if it happens during your trip.

The Silver Lining

Frontierland and Liberty Square have been relatively quiet in recent years while attention went to other parks. A major expansion on this side of Magic Kingdom means this corner will get real investment for the first time in a while, including infrastructure like walkways, facilities, and capacity that benefits guests long before the rides open.

How to Read Permits Like This One

If you follow construction news, a few habits help:

  • Watch the filing entity. Imagineering filings suggest guest-facing work; Facilities Asset Management filings usually mean maintenance
  • Watch the address. New numbers mean new buildings
  • Watch the contractor. Specialists like sign or theming companies tell you what phase a project is in
  • Don’t over-read a single permit. One filing is a data point, not a plan

This one is a good example. A general construction permit at a new address near an active construction site is solid evidence of a new structure. It is not evidence of a new attraction, a new entrance, or anything else fans might hope for.

The Bottom Line

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a permit for 1610 Magic Kingdom Dr, a new address steps from Haunted Mansion, with PCL Construction handling general construction on what looks like a ground-up building tied to Piston Peak.

The D23 scale model suggests it’s a restroom facility. Meanwhile, a tower crane has arrived and retaining walls continue going up, with Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along still undated.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
