Disney Theme Park Simulation Game? Frontier Signs Deal

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Frontier Developments new Disney game and Disney theme park sim speculation

Frontier Developments is making a Disney game. That sentence alone is enough to get theme park fans paying attention, because Frontier is the studio behind Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo. A Disney theme park simulation game is suddenly a real possibility, and the studio’s own announcement points hard in that direction.

The Cambridge-based developer confirmed an agreement with Disney to develop and publish a game drawing on Disney’s portfolio of characters and properties. What Frontier did not do is say what kind of game it is. That gap is where all the speculation lives, and to be clear up front: nothing about a parks builder has been confirmed.

But the language Frontier used is specific, and it narrows the field considerably. Here is what was actually announced, what the studio’s track record suggests, and how much weight the theme park sim theory deserves.

Quick Summary

  • Frontier Developments announced an agreement with Disney to develop and publish a new game
  • The game will draw on Disney’s portfolio of characters and properties
  • Frontier has not said what type of game it will be
  • The studio says it will build on its experience in the Creative Management Simulation genre
  • That genre includes Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo, and Jurassic World Evolution
  • A Disney parks-building game fits the studio’s history better than any other format

What Frontier Actually Announced

Frontier confirmed the deal today. The agreement covers developing and publishing a game built on Disney’s characters and properties, and Frontier stated it will build on its experience in the Creative Management Simulation genre, which the industry shortens to CMS.

CEO Jo Cooke said:

“We are delighted to announce this collaboration with Disney, which further reinforces our clearly defined strategy of developing and nurturing world-class creative management simulation game franchises. Our mission with this game is to connect a passionate creative community of players with one of the world’s most iconic and beloved brands, and I can’t wait to see what our talented teams will create with this amazing opportunity.”

Read that carefully and one phrase does the heavy lifting: creative management simulation. Frontier is telling you the genre without telling you the subject.

Why a Theme Park Sim Is the Obvious Fit

Frontier’s CMS catalog is short and consistent. Planet Coaster puts you in charge of building and running a theme park, ride by ride and path by path. Planet Zoo does the same for animal parks. Jurassic World Evolution does it for dinosaur parks built on a licensed film property.

Every one of those games is about designing a guest attraction and then keeping it running.

Now map that onto Disney. Disney’s most valuable and most simulation-ready assets are its parks and attractions. A studio that has spent a decade perfecting park-building mechanics, partnering with the company that defines the modern theme park, is the most direct line anyone could draw.

Jurassic World Evolution is the closest precedent. Frontier took a licensed property and built a park management sim around it. Disney is a far larger portfolio, but the pattern is identical.

The Case for Slowing Down

Here is the part worth sitting with before you get too excited.

Frontier said the game draws on Disney’s portfolio of characters and properties. That is broader than parks. Characters are the emphasis in that phrasing, and Disney owns Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and the animation library alongside the parks.

A CMS game built around Disney characters could take other shapes. A city or world builder populated by Disney characters. A studio or production sim. Something drawing on the animation side rather than the parks side.

There is also no release window, no platform list, and no title. Games announced at this stage are frequently years out, and plenty change shape between the announcement and the reveal.

So the honest read is this: a parks sim is the most likely single outcome, but “most likely” is not “confirmed.”

What Would Make This Work

If Frontier does build a Disney parks game, the interesting question is how much freedom it gets.

Planet Coaster’s appeal is total creative control. You build whatever you want. A Disney license usually comes with brand guidelines, and the tension between an open sandbox and a protected brand is the thing to watch.

The best version of this game gives you real Disney attractions as building blocks and lets you arrange them however you like. A weaker version hands you preset layouts and calls it a park.

Frontier’s own words point at the better outcome. Connecting a creative community of players with the brand suggests a sandbox rather than a guided experience.

The Bottom Line

A Disney theme park simulation game from the Planet Coaster studio is not confirmed, but it is the reading that fits every piece of information available. Frontier makes park builders. Frontier says this game builds on its park-builder expertise. Disney’s parks are the most simulation-ready thing Disney owns.

Treat it as a strong possibility rather than a done deal. There is no title, no genre confirmation, no platforms, and no date.

We will update you when Frontier says more. If this turns out to be what it looks like, it may be the theme park game Disney fans have been asking for since Planet Coaster launched.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
