First Theming Appears on Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift Construction Update

Hollywood Drift Construction Update

The track is done. Now the fun part starts.

If you have been watching the old Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit site all year waiting for something other than steel to show up, this is your week. This Hollywood Drift construction update covers the first real pieces of theming going in around Universal Studios Florida’s newest coaster, and the biggest one is hard to miss: a full semi-truck cab now sits at the very start of the layout.

Every piece of track and every support column is installed. That happened faster than a lot of us expected. Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift is set to open next year, and when it does it could become the fastest roller coaster at the entire Universal Orlando Resort. That is a real claim in a resort that already has Velocicoaster and Stardust Racers.

Here is what just went up, where it sits on the ride, and why you can already walk under the thing during Halloween Horror Nights.

Quick Summary

  • All track and supports for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift are now installed at Universal Studios Florida.
  • A Peterbilt-style semi-truck cab has been added at the start of the layout, facing riders during the first launch.
  • Framing for an arch has gone up directly above the truck and the launch.
  • Trains will leave the station toward the maintenance building, then launch straight out past the truck on the right.
  • The coaster’s rotating cars will pass over the Music Plaza Stage twice per ride.
  • Halloween Horror Nights walkways under the track have been kept open, so event guests get close-up looks this fall.
  • The ride opens next year and could be the fastest coaster at Universal Orlando Resort.

The Truck Prop Is the First Real Theming

A truck cab appeared on site this week, and it reads as a Peterbilt-style rig.

It sits at the very beginning of the track, right where the first launch happens. That placement matters. The truck faces the riders head-on as they hit that launch, so the first thing you see when the ride shoves you forward is a semi coming straight at you.

That is a smart, simple visual. You do not need a long story setup to understand a truck barreling at your face.

How the Ride Actually Starts

The launch sequence is stranger than most people assume, and it explains why the truck sits where it does.

Trains will first roll out of the station heading toward the ride’s maintenance building. They stop back there. Then they launch straight out from that position to kick the ride off, passing the truck on their right as they go.

So the truck is not scenery you glance at from a queue. It is the thing you accelerate past at the top of the experience.

The Arch Above the Launch

Framing for an arch has also been installed above the first launch, sitting directly over the truck.

Universal has not said how this arch will be themed. The most reasonable guess, based on where it sits and what it is attached to, is the back half of the same semi. Picture a jackknifed trailer folded over the track, with your car ripping underneath it. That would tie the truck cab and the arch into one piece of storytelling instead of two unrelated props.

Treat that as speculation, not fact. The framing is real; the theming is not confirmed.

Where the Track Runs Overhead

Above that launch area, the higher level of track is the return run. That is the stretch that brings you back to the station at the end of the ride, passing over the themed archway you launched under at the start.

The final brake run wraps around the station building itself before pulling in.

Elsewhere on the layout, the track passes directly over the Music Plaza Stage. You will cross that spot twice in one ride: once at the beginning and again on the way home. The coaster’s rotating cars mean your orientation over that stage will not be the same both times.

You Can Walk Under It During Halloween Horror Nights

Universal kept the Halloween Horror Nights pathways open underneath the completed track.

Guests heading to and from the haunted houses in the sound stages will travel right under the finished coaster circuit this fall. That gives HHN crowds the first up-close look at Hollywood Drift while it is still under construction.

If you have HHN tickets, do not sprint past it. Slow down at that stretch and look up. Getting to stand under a finished coaster layout before it opens is not something Universal usually hands out for free.

What to Watch Next

Theming installation is the phase where a coaster stops looking like a construction site and starts looking like a ride. Expect more props, more facade work, and eventually testing with trains on the track.

The truck is the first piece. It will not be the last.

Final Thoughts

This Hollywood Drift construction update marks a real turning point. Steel work is finished, and the scenic team has moved in. A Peterbilt-style truck cab now anchors the first launch, an arch frame sits above it waiting for its skin, and the whole circuit is complete enough that Halloween Horror Nights guests can walk beneath it.

Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift opens next year and has a legitimate shot at being the fastest coaster at Universal Orlando Resort. Between now and then, the theming going in around that launch will tell us a lot about how seriously Universal is taking this replacement for Rip Ride Rockit.

Keep an eye on that archway. If it becomes a jackknifed trailer, this ride is starting stronger than anyone expected.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
