Lunch at the top of the Contemporary with the man who built Animal Kingdom, and a signed book on the way out.

- 45-minute moderated conversation
- Tickets on sale Friday, August 28
- Gold Members $159 at 2pm ET, General Members $199 at 3pm ET

What’s Included
Your ticket gets you:
- A buffet lunch at California Grill, atop Disney’s Contemporary Resort with views of Seven Seas Lagoon

- A 45-minute moderated conversation with Rohde
Ticket Prices and On-Sale Times
Tickets go on sale Friday, August 28, 2026:
- Gold Members: 2pm ET — $159 (+$3 processing fee) per ticket
- General Members: 3pm ET — $199 (+$3 processing fee) per ticket
The $40 Gold Member gap plus the earlier access window is significant for an event this small. If you’re on the fence about a Gold membership and want this, do the math before Friday.
Is It Worth $159?
Worth breaking down honestly, because the number looks steep.
California Grill is a signature dining location — one of the most sought-after reservations at Walt Disney World, on the 15th floor of the Contemporary with panoramic views across Seven Seas Lagoon to Magic Kingdom. A standard meal there runs a substantial amount on its own.
“Floating Mountains” is a newly released hardcover, and a signed copy carries genuine collector value. Signed copies were among the fastest-moving items in the D23 2026 merchandise drop.
Stack those two and the 45-minute conversation is effectively the margin. Lunch at a signature restaurant plus a signed first-run book plus an intimate talk from the most significant Imagineer of the modern era is a defensible $159.
At $199 for general members it’s tighter, but still not unreasonable for what’s included.
The real constraint is capacity. California Grill isn’t large, and D23 events at this scale sell out quickly.
Who Joe Rohde Is
Joe Rohde spent decades as an Imagineer, shaping attractions and lands across Walt Disney World Resort.
He led Disney’s Animal Kingdom from concept through opening in 1998, and created Pandora — The World of Avatar. He drove the park’s entire design philosophy: authentic materials, real cultural consultation, and environments built to be inhabited rather than looked at.
He retired from Disney in 2021 after roughly 40 years.
At this event, you’ll hear him talk about his career, his travels, and the stories behind his work.
Why His Perspective Matters Right Now
Rohde’s approach is having a moment. Disney invoked exactly his methodology at D23 2026 when describing Tropical Americas — the archaeologists, anthropologists, and Maya experts consulted for Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, and the 50-plus Colombian animal species verified for Antonio’s Fiesta de Encanto.
That’s the Animal Kingdom playbook, applied to a new land. Hearing the person who wrote it discuss storytelling while it’s being used again is better timing than D23 probably planned.
His travels are the other draw. Rohde’s design work has always been grounded in extensive field research — Nepal for Expedition Everest, East Africa for Animal Kingdom Lodge — and those stories are the substance of the book.
Parking and Guidelines
Parking is not available on site at Disney’s Contemporary Resort for this event.
Park at the Transportation and Ticket Center and take the bus or monorail to the resort.
Plan extra time for that. The TTC to Contemporary connection requires the resort monorail loop, which is not the fastest transfer on property. Arriving late to a timed lunch event isn’t recoverable.
D23 also asks that you:
- Leave additional personal items for autographs at home
- Refrain from requesting photos with Rohde during the event
Those are standard for author events with a signed-book inclusion — the signing is done in advance so the conversation isn’t consumed by a line.
The Companion Event
D23 announced a second Rohde appearance two days later — the “55 Magical Years of Storytelling” Spotlight Series event on October 4, also at the Contemporary.
That one starts at $59 and pairs Rohde with the Walt Disney Archives team presenting on Carousel of Progress.
Both go on sale Friday, August 28, at overlapping times:
- Spotlight Series: 1pm ET for all tiers
- Rohde lunch: Gold 2pm ET, General 3pm ET
If you want both, the Spotlight Series sale opens first.
The Bottom Line
D23’s lunch with Joe Rohde at California Grill lands October 2, 2026, including a buffet lunch atop Disney’s Contemporary Resort, a signed copy of “Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossible,” and a 45-minute moderated conversation.
Tickets go on sale Friday, August 28 — Gold Members at 2pm ET for $159, General Members at 3pm ET for $199.
