Poseidon’s Fury Trident Demolished at Islands of Adventure

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Poseidon's Fury Trident Demolished

The trident is gone. The giant trident that towered over the entrance to Poseidon’s Fury has been removed at Universal Islands of Adventure, marking the latest loss in the steady disappearance of one of the park’s original opening day lands.

If you’ve been watching The Lost Continent demolition unfold over the past several months, this is the one that stings. That trident served as a visual centerpiece of the land for more than 25 years, visible from across the park and helping define the skyline since Islands of Adventure opened in 1999.

Universal still hasn’t announced what’s coming. Here’s what’s been lost so far, what’s still standing, and what we can reasonably read into it.

Quick Summary

  • The giant trident above the Poseidon’s Fury entrance has been demolished
  • The trident stood for more than 25 years, since Islands of Adventure opened in 1999
  • The themed archway to The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad has also been demolished
  • The former Sindbad theater has been largely cleared
  • Doc Sugrue’s Desert Kebab House has now closed
  • Construction walls continue to expand throughout the land
  • Universal has not announced plans for the area

What’s Been Removed

The trident is the headline, but it’s part of a pattern.

The removal comes alongside other recent changes throughout the area:

  • The themed archway that once welcomed guests to The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad has been demolished
  • The former Sindbad theater has been largely cleared
  • Doc Sugrue’s Desert Kebab House has now closed
  • Construction walls have continued to expand throughout the land in recent weeks

Each individual removal could be read as maintenance or a small refresh. Together, they read as a land being systematically dismantled.

Why the Trident Mattered

If you never experienced Poseidon’s Fury, the trident probably registered as set dressing. It wasn’t.

The Lost Continent had a specific problem from day one: it was a land without a headliner. Poseidon’s Fury was a walkthrough effects show, Dueling Dragons was eventually absorbed into Harry Potter, and Sindbad was a stunt show. None of those give you a skyline.

The trident did. It was the thing you could see from the bridge, from Seuss Landing, from across the lagoon. It told you there was something over there. For a land defined more by atmosphere than by attractions, that visual anchor did an enormous amount of work.

Removing it doesn’t just take down a prop. It removes the land’s presence in the park.

The Slow Disappearance of The Lost Continent

Worth tracing the arc, because this has been happening for a long time.

The Lost Continent opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999 as one of the park’s original lands, covering Greek mythology and Arabian themes across two distinct sections.

Since then:

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter took the Merlinwood section in 2010, absorbing Dueling Dragons and a substantial portion of the land’s footprint
  • Dueling Dragons became Dragon Challenge, then closed entirely in 2017 for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
  • The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad closed permanently in 2018
  • Poseidon’s Fury closed and has now had its exterior icon removed

What remains is Mythos Restaurant and the surrounding pathways.

What Could Be Coming?

Universal has yet to announce plans for the area. What the evidence supports:

  • This is redevelopment, not maintenance. You don’t demolish a 25-year-old landmark structure and clear a theater during routine upkeep.
  • The scope is substantial. Walls expanding around multiple locations including space in front of Mythos suggests a project larger than a single attraction replacement.
  • Universal has the appetite. Epic Universe demonstrated the company will commit serious capital to Orlando, and Islands of Adventure has been the park most in need of investment.

The rumors are pointing towards a Nintendo property. Jim Hill from Jill Hill Media, as mentioned, has either Zelda or Pokemon as the top two contenders, with Zelda originally leading the way. However, recent intel has pointed more towards Pokemon. Especially with the upcoming addition of Pokemon to Universal Japan.

Should You Visit Before It’s Gone?

If you have any attachment to The Lost Continent, go now.

Here’s the honest situation: the land is already substantially reduced. The trident is down, the Sindbad archway is down, the theater is cleared, and construction walls are spreading. What you’d be visiting is the remnant, not the land as it existed.

But Mythos Restaurant is still operating, and it remains one of the best-themed dining rooms in any Orlando theme park. The rockwork, the waterfall views over the lagoon, and the interior cave architecture are all intact.

Go for Mythos. Walk the paths while they’re still walkable. Take the photos you’ll want later.

A Note on Original Opening Day Lands

Islands of Adventure opened in 1999 with five islands plus Port of Entry. The Lost Continent is the one that’s been dismantled piece by piece rather than replaced in a single project.

That slow attrition is its own kind of loss. A land that closes and reopens as something new gives fans a clear ending. A land that disappears one prop at a time over fifteen years never quite gets a goodbye.

The Bottom Line

The Poseidon’s Fury trident has been demolished at Universal Islands of Adventure, joining the Sindbad archway, the Sindbad theater, and Doc Sugrue’s Desert Kebab House on the list of Lost Continent losses.

Construction walls keep expanding and Universal has announced nothing. The continued demolition leaves The Lost Continent increasingly stripped of the landmarks that once defined it.

If it matters to you, book a table at Mythos and go see what’s left while you still can.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

We were able to really relax and focus on quality time as a family and have so much fun doing it! I will definitely reach out for any future trips.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
