Tom Fitzgerald Appears to Retire From Walt Disney Imagineering

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Tom Fitzgerald, Walt Disney Imagineer

One of the most influential creative voices in Disney parks history appears to be stepping away. Tom Fitzgerald appears to have retired from Walt Disney Imagineering after more than 46 years with the company.

The Tom Fitzgerald Imagineering retirement has not been confirmed by Disney. Disney artist Eric Robison posted photos on LinkedIn this week from what he described as Tom’s retirement party at WDI. Robison said he spent time at Imagineering and attended the celebration, sharing several photos from the event in his post.

Disney has not made a statement, and no other details are available right now.

If this is accurate, it closes out a career that shaped an enormous share of what you experience in Disney parks worldwide. Here’s what Fitzgerald built over four and a half decades.

What We Actually Know

Let’s be precise about the sourcing, because it matters.

Eric Robison, a Disney artist, posted photos on LinkedIn from what he described as Tom Fitzgerald’s retirement party at Walt Disney Imagineering. Robison said he spent time at Imagineering and attended the celebration.

Disney has not made a statement about Fitzgerald’s retirement. No press release, no internal announcement made public, no comment.

That’s a retirement party attended by a colleague and documented publicly. It’s strong evidence and it is not an official confirmation. Treat it accordingly until Disney says something.

A 46-Year Career

Fitzgerald joined WED Enterprises, now known as Walt Disney Imagineering, in 1979.

Over his career, he worked on many of the attractions and shows you know from the Disney parks, including:

  • Star Tours, as original writer/producer, and later as creative director for Star Tours – The Adventures Continue
  • The 2006 revamp of Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Updates to Tower of Terror
  • Cinémagique, Soarin’ Around the World, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Muppet*Vision 3D, and It’s Tough to be a Bug!

Why That List Is Remarkable

Read it again and notice what it covers.

Star Tours brought a major film franchise into a Disney park in a way that actually worked, at a time when that was far from a solved problem. It ran essentially unchanged for over two decades, then Fitzgerald came back to lead the version that replaced it.

The 2006 Pirates revamp is the one that added Captain Jack Sparrow to the ride. Whatever you think of that decision, it’s one of the most consequential changes made to a classic Disney attraction, and it kept a 1967 ride culturally relevant for another generation.

Muppet*Vision 3D was Jim Henson’s last project before his death. Getting that right carried a weight most attraction projects don’t.

And It’s Tough to be a Bug! ran at Animal Kingdom for 26 years, which is a long life for a 4D film show.

The Executive Years

In 1989, Fitzgerald became executive producer of Theme Park Productions, the division that handles film and video for Disney parks.

In 2001, he added the role of executive vice president and senior creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering, leading creative direction for Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris.

That second role is worth sitting with. Leading creative direction for two entire resorts — one of them the original park, the other Disney’s most design-celebrated international property — is about as senior as creative work at Imagineering gets.

Recent Work

More recently, Fitzgerald held the titles Portfolio Executive Creative Director and Chief Storytelling Executive at Imagineering.

His recent projects included:

  • Soarin’ Across America
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

You may also recognize him from Disney+ productions like Behind the Attraction and The Most Magical Story on Earth: 50 Years of Walt Disney World.

Those Disney+ appearances put a face to Imagineering for a lot of fans who had never thought about who designs an attraction. For a discipline that historically kept its people behind the curtain, that visibility mattered.

What This Would Mean for Imagineering

If confirmed, this is a significant departure at a moment when Imagineering has an unusually full slate.

Tropical Americas is under construction at Animal Kingdom. Carousel of Progress is getting updated scenes in 2027. BoardWalk additions arrive in late 2026. Multiple resort and attraction reinvestment projects are in flight simultaneously.

Losing a Chief Storytelling Executive with 46 years of institutional memory during that stretch is a real transition. Imagineering has deep bench strength, but nobody replaces four and a half decades of context.

It also continues a broader generational handoff. The Imagineers who came up in the 1970s and 1980s under the direct influence of Walt’s original team are steadily reaching retirement, and the institution is passing to people who learned from them rather than from the founders.

The Bottom Line

The Tom Fitzgerald Imagineering retirement appears to have happened after more than 46 years, based on a Disney artist’s LinkedIn post about a retirement party at WDI. Disney has not confirmed it.

His work spans Star Tours, the 2006 Pirates of the Caribbean revamp, Muppet*Vision 3D, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Soarin’, It’s Tough to be a Bug!, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, alongside years leading creative direction for Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris.

We’ll update this article if more information becomes available. In the meantime, next time you’re on Star Tours or watching Muppet*Vision, you know whose fingerprints are on it.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Our experience working with Nate as our Disney vacation planner was exceptional. He was responsive and thorough. He gave us insights that made the trip go much more smoothly. We were able to really relax and focus on quality time as a family and have so much fun doing it! I will definitely reach out for any future trips.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
