Expedition Everest’s Latest Queue Change Affects Single Rider Wait Times

Expedition Everest's Latest Queue Change

If you rely on the single rider line at Expedition Everest to cut your wait time, you need to know about the latest change at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. A new boarding process in the red room — the final holding area before the loading platform — is affecting how often the single rider queue gets called, and the result is noticeably longer waits through that line. Here is what changed and what it means for your next visit.

Quick Summary

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom has made another boarding change at Expedition Everest to increase ride throughput
  • Standby guests in the red room are now sorted into odd and even numbered groups before reaching the platform
  • Even-numbered groups go left, odd-numbered groups go right for more efficient train loading
  • The change follows the recent addition of pre-boarding video screens in the same area
  • Single rider wait times are now longer because odd-numbered groups already supply individual guests to fill gaps in vehicles
  • The single rider line is still operating, just less frequently called forward

The New Red Room Sorting System

The latest change at Expedition Everest focuses on the red room — the final holding area that guests pass through just before reaching the boarding platform. Standby guests entering that space are now being sorted into odd and even numbered groups. Even-numbered groups move to the left side, odd-numbered groups move to the right.

The goal is simple: by pre-sorting guests before they hit the platform, cast members can fill each train more efficiently. Instead of managing a large undivided group on the platform and manually directing guests to specific rows, the sorting is done in advance so the process flows faster once the train arrives.

Pre-Boarding Video Screens Were Just the Start

This latest change builds on another recent update to the same area. Disney had already added pre-boarding video screens in the red room, which show guests how to operate the coaster restraint and stow their items before reaching the platform. Those screens reduce the time cast members spend explaining procedures at the vehicle itself, speeding up the boarding process.

Together, the video screens and the odd/even sorting system are clearly part of a broader effort to push Expedition Everest’s throughput higher. More guests on trains faster means shorter standby waits over the course of the day — in theory, at least.

What This Means for Single Rider Guests

Here is the catch. The single rider line at Expedition Everest is still operating, but if you plan to use it, expect slower progress than you might be used to.

The single rider queue exists to fill gaps in ride vehicles when a group does not fill a row completely. But now that odd-numbered standby groups are already pre-sorted in the red room, cast members have a ready supply of individual guests on hand to fill those gaps. That means the single rider queue gets called forward less often, and wait times through that line have gone up noticeably as a result.

If you are a solo traveler or a duo hoping to use the single rider line to save time, factor this in when planning your day. The line still works — it just moves more slowly than it did before this system was put in place.

How to Plan Around the Change

For most guests, the odd/even sorting change is a positive. Standby wait times should improve as Disney fine-tunes the system. If you are visiting Animal Kingdom and Expedition Everest is on your list, the standby line should move more predictably than it has in the past.

For single riders, the calculation changes. If wait times in the single rider line have increased significantly, it may be worth checking whether the standby line is actually comparable before committing. On a less crowded day, the standby line might move just as fast — or faster — than the single rider queue under the new system.

Disney continues to experiment with boarding procedures at Expedition Everest as they optimize the experience, so stay tuned for any further updates from DisMornings as they emerge.
