OpenAI Announces Sora Closure — Disney’s $1 Billion Deal Now in Limbo

OpenAI Announces Sora Closure

In a surprise move that sent shockwaves through the entertainment and tech industries, OpenAI has announced it is shutting down Sora, its AI video generation service. The closure directly impacts Disney’s high-profile partnership with OpenAI — including what had been a planned $1 billion equity investment and a character licensing deal covering more than 200 Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters.

What OpenAI Announced

OpenAI posted on X: “We’re saying goodbye to Sora. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.” No specific shutdown date was given, but the company says it will release information on wind-down timelines and how users can preserve content they’ve already created with the platform.

The decision appears to be driven by a broader strategic refocus at OpenAI. Company executives have acknowledged they can’t do everything at once, and the shutdown comes ahead of an anticipated IPO. This is despite the company recently raising $110 billion in new funding, giving it a total valuation of around $730 billion. Sora launched publicly in 2024 and Sora 2 launched in October, reaching the top of the iOS App Store’s Photo and Video category within a single day — so the quick reversal is surprising.

What This Means for Disney

The Sora closure appears to be taking Disney’s entire OpenAI agreement down with it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, citing a source familiar with the matter, Disney is walking away from the broader deal it signed with OpenAI in December 2025 — including the $1 billion equity investment and the character licensing agreement.

The deal had been significant for both companies. Disney had committed to becoming a major OpenAI customer, using its APIs to build new products and experiences, including features for Disney+. Through Sora, users were slated to get access to short AI-generated videos featuring characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars — a rollout that had been planned to begin in early 2026.

Disney issued a carefully worded statement: “As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere. We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”

The statement stops short of explicitly confirming the full exit from the broader deal, but the language strongly suggests the partnership is over.

What Happens Next

OpenAI says more details are coming, including shutdown timelines and preservation options for user-created content. There’s no word yet on whether any replacement video generation product is in the works at OpenAI.

For Disney, the statement makes clear they’re not walking away from AI entirely — they’re “continuing to engage with AI platforms.” Whether that leads to a similar deal with a competitor like Google, Runway, or another video AI company remains to be seen. Given the scale of the original investment ($1 billion) and Disney’s clear interest in bringing AI-generated character content to fans, it seems likely they’ll find another partner — just not OpenAI.

It’s also worth noting that Sora attracted significant scrutiny from copyright and deepfake experts over generated videos featuring third-party characters, so Disney may have been watching that concern closely. Whatever comes next, it’s a notable shift in Disney’s AI strategy, and we’ll be watching for what partnership announcement comes next.
