Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin Gets Easter Eggs

Walt Disney Imagineering just gave us a closer look at what’s waiting inside the updated Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin — and it’s more than just new hardware.

In a new interview with Fox35, WDI producer Kimberly Alison confirmed that the refurbished attraction will feature new Easter eggs for riders to find, a refreshed queue, and what sounds like possible Toy Story 5 tie-ins when the ride reopens in spring 2026. Here’s everything she revealed about what superfans and first-timers alike will find when Buzz Lightyear returns to Magic Kingdom.

Quick Summary

  • New Easter eggs hidden throughout the ride for superfans to discover
  • Digital targets unlock new hidden gameplay surprises not possible with original mechanical targets
  • The queue is getting a refresh — WDI says it will “feel refreshed”
  • Possible Toy Story 5 references hidden in the ride (Toy Story 5 hits theaters this summer)
  • No specific reopening date beyond spring 2026

Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin Easter Eggs: What WDI Revealed

Kimberly Alison, a producer with Walt Disney Imagineering, told Fox35 that preserving and expanding hidden surprises was a deliberate priority in the redesign.

“We wanted to make sure that we preserved a lot of those special secrets that we know our superfans love to find,” Alison said. “But now that we have all digital targets, it allowed us to actually take a look at the gameplay and add even more fun surprises. So we do encourage riders to keep a really sharp eye out as they ride.”

The move to fully digital interactive targets is doing more than just upgrading the feedback system. It’s opened up creative possibilities that simply weren’t possible with the original mechanical targets. Hidden elements, unlockable moments, and new gameplay layers can now be built into the experience in ways the original ride never could have supported.

Toy Story 5 Connections at Buzz Lightyear?

With Toy Story 5 set to hit theaters this summer, Fox35 pressed Alison on whether the attraction would include nods to the upcoming film. She didn’t confirm specifics — but the answer was unmistakably a yes.

“We’re going to say keep a sharp eye out when you ride,” Alison said. “There are some fun surprises that we can’t wait for you guys to discover.”

The phrasing is careful, but it’s a clear signal. Between the Easter eggs, the digital targets, and the timing of the ride’s spring reopening ahead of Toy Story 5’s theatrical release, this attraction is positioned to be a living extension of the franchise.

The Queue Is Getting a Refresh Too

Beyond the ride itself, Alison confirmed that the queue area is also being updated — though she stopped short of sharing specifics.

“We are kind of reassessing our queue,” Alison said. “It’s going to feel refreshed as well.”

A queue refresh on its own might not sound exciting, but pair it with digital targets that can hide Easter eggs anywhere in the experience and it becomes part of the puzzle. There may be things to find before you even board your vehicle.

Everything Else That’s New in the 2026 Update

The Easter eggs and Toy Story 5 hints are layered on top of an already significant overhaul. Here’s the full picture of what’s changing when Buzz Lightyear reopens:

  • New opening sequence introducing Buddy, a new support robot created by WDI and Pixar
  • Hyperspace tunnel upgraded with new projection technology showing Buzz and Emperor Zurg for the first time during the ride
  • Redesigned ride vehicles with Star Command styling and onboard screens for real-time scoring
  • Handheld blasters replacing the fixed originals, with vibration, sound effects, and an always-on laser
  • Interactive targets throughout the ride that react and light up when hit
  • New Space Mountain-style marquee with white spire design, now installed at the entrance

Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin Easter Eggs: Worth Going Back For

Here’s the thing about the Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin Easter eggs and Toy Story 5 surprises: they’re built for repeat riders. The switch to digital targets means the hidden content can change, expand, or be unlocked in ways that weren’t possible before. WDI didn’t build a one-and-done experience here.

If you’re a superfan who has memorized every corner of the original ride, you’re going to want to ride this new version multiple times. And if you’re bringing kids who are counting down to Toy Story 5, the spring reopening just became an even bigger event. We’ll update with the official opening date the moment Disney announces it.

I’m no stranger to Disney planning, as a Disneyland magic key holder and DVC member. I’m the person people ask for trip planning advice. But I had never been on a Disney cruise, and had heard great about Nate and decided to reach out. I’m so glad I did because we could not have been happier with our experience. His tips and insights were incredibly helpful, and he was incredibly responsive any time we had a question. Who do the Disney experts turn to when they need help? Nate, that’s who. We’ll definitely be using him again.

Our experience working with Nate as our Disney vacation planner was exceptional. He was responsive and thorough. He gave us insights that made the trip go much more smoothly. We were able to really relax and focus on quality time as a family and have so much fun doing it! I will definitely reach out for any future trips.

Could not have wanted or expected more from Nate, our Distrips and More agent as we planned our 2025 Disney World trip. Nate was VERY responsive to emails and texts and more than willing to do whatever he could to guide us and answer our questions. On several occasions I emailed him over the weekend not expecting a response until Monday but each time he responded before the weekend was over. He even participated in a Zoom session with our group of five seniors as we planned our trip. He also helped us at the 11th hour when we added a family member to our travel group less than a month before our trip. Without a doubt, I will reach out to Nate when I'm ready to plan my next trip to Disney World!

We are so thankful we used Nate to plan not only our first Disney trip, but also our second. He made the process so easy for us, especially for us since it was our first time going. There was a lot to consider and many decisions to make, such as where to stay, when to go, and what to experience. Nate really helped us narrow down what we wanted to do overall, but he didn’t stop there. He provided detailed guides to help us navigate the airport and find our transportation to the resort, as well as a guide to explore the resorts and make sure we saw the best Christmas decorations. One of the many amazing things he also did was set up our dinner reservations for us. This saved us so much stress and allowed us to get some of our top choices. From the moment we landed in Orlando to the moment we headed back home, he made sure everything went smoothly. You truly can’t go wrong with going to him for your next trip.

Nathan has been an amazing trip planner for me! So helpful and responsive. I am a very type A person -- so someone who is even more on top of their game than me -- is so so appreciated! Nathan has booked 3 trips for me (1 completed 2 pending) and it was perfection. Thanks again!

Nate has helped us with our vacation planning for the last couple of years and we couldn't be happier with his service and expertise. We've used other travel agents in the past and none of them have done as phenomenal a job to make sure every detail is taken care of as he has. Switching to Nate was one of the best decisions we've ever made. He's always quick to answer questions and works tirelessly to make sure we get everything we want from our trips. Plus, he's just a genuinely great person who is wonderful to work with. Whether you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World, Disneyland, a Disney Cruise, or any other vacation, Nate is the guy you want putting it all together! Five stars across the board!
