Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is getting a significant upgrade — and the changes are a lot more substantial than a fresh coat of paint. Disney has revealed plans for updated blasters with vibration, sound, and always-on lasers, reactive targets, Star Command styling throughout, real-time scoring screens, and new exterior signage. The revamped attraction is targeting a spring 2026 reopening. Here’s what to expect when Buzz comes back online at Magic Kingdom.
New Attraction Descriptions
Disney World has updated the attraction description on the website. The new descriptions reads as follow:
“Incoming Transmission – Enhancements Acquired
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is almost back and will be power-packed with more fun at Magic Kingdom park! Star Command’s top minds have added a series of enhancements, including handheld blasters for more freedom of movement, additional interactive targets, scores that go lightyears beyond what you can imagine, and Buddy–our newest crew member!
Don’t miss your chance to team up with Buzz and save the galaxy on a supercharged adventure with fun that goes to infinity and beyond.”
New Handheld Blasters: A Real Improvement
The current blasters have always been a sticking point for Space Ranger Spin fans — the joystick-operated, delay-heavy firing mechanism doesn’t always feel responsive. The new handheld blasters address that directly. The upgrades include vibration feedback, sound effects, and an always-on laser that makes targeting dramatically easier and more satisfying. For guests who’ve never been able to rack up a solid score because the blasters felt unresponsive, this is a meaningful fix.
Reactive Targets
Beyond the blasters, the targets themselves are getting an upgrade. Reactive targets respond visually and physically when hit, which adds a feedback loop the current version doesn’t have. In interactive shooting attractions, reactive targets make a significant difference in how engaging the experience feels — it’s the difference between guessing whether your shots landed and actually seeing results in real time.
Real-Time Scoring Screens and Star Command Styling
New real-time scoring screens throughout the ride vehicle give you continuous score feedback during your mission rather than waiting until the end. Combined with updated Star Command styling that brings the attraction’s visual language closer to the Buzz Lightyear IP, the whole experience should feel more cohesive and modern. New exterior signage is also part of the refresh.
When It Reopens
The upgraded Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is targeting a spring 2026 reopening. Spring at Disney World typically means March through May. No specific date has been confirmed, but the scope of changes described puts this squarely in the category of attractions worth waiting for if you can time your trip around the reopening.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has been a Magic Kingdom staple since 1998. The upgrades coming in spring 2026 bring it into the modern era of interactive attractions. Better blasters alone would make this worth revisiting — add reactive targets and real-time scoring and you’ve got a genuinely improved ride. If you’re planning a Magic Kingdom visit this spring, keep an eye on the reopening date announcement.
