Hey Disney Vacationers! Disney just made one of its biggest technology moves yet. Disney invest $1 billion in OpenAI and brings more than 200 Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters into both Sora and ChatGPT Images beginning in early 2026. This partnership opens the door for fans to create short-form videos and images featuring beloved characters simply by typing a prompt.
Here’s everything you need to know about how this agreement works, what it allows, and what Bob Iger and Sam Altman said about the future of AI-powered storytelling.
Quick Summary

- Disney will use OpenAI’s tools internally and for new Disney+ features.
- The companies emphasize safety, creator rights, and responsible AI.
Disney’s New Partnership With OpenAI
Disney and OpenAI have reached a licensing agreement that places Sora at the center of a new wave of fan creativity. Beginning in early 2026, fans will be able to type simple prompts and generate short videos or images featuring characters from Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. The content is intended for social sharing, giving fans an easy way to interact with Disney storytelling in formats they use every day.
Disney will also highlight select fan-created videos on Disney+, creating a new bridge between user-generated content and the company’s streaming platform.
The agreement covers more than 200 animated, masked, or creature characters and includes access to themed environments, costumes, vehicles, and props. Performer likenesses and voices remain protected and are not part of the deal.
What the Licensing Deal Actually Allows
Under this partnership, Sora will be able to generate short-form videos—up to 30 seconds—based entirely on user prompts. These videos can feature iconic Disney characters placed into environments or scenarios the user describes. ChatGPT Images will support still image generation based on many of the same characters and settings.
Disney emphasized that the experience is designed with built-in guardrails. The intent is to give fans freedom to experiment with characters they love while ensuring that the content stays respectful, age-appropriate, and safe. The limitations around likeness rights maintain protection for human performers while allowing animated and masked characters to appear in AI-generated content.
Disney expects these tools to roll out in early 2026 across OpenAI’s platforms.
What Iger and Altman Said About the Deal
Disney CEO Bob Iger and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared together on CNBC to explain why this partnership matters and how they plan to protect creators in the process.
Iger said the collaboration gives Disney a modern platform for fans to engage with its stories. He emphasized that the agreement respects the artists behind Disney’s characters and includes licensing fees to protect creative work. Iger made clear that Disney does not see this technology as a threat to its storytellers because the tools are focused on short-form, personal creations—not on replacing professional productions.
Altman highlighted the high level of interest OpenAI users have shown in creating content with Disney characters. He called Disney the gold standard of storytelling and said removing the barriers to creating video will unlock new forms of creativity from everyday fans. Altman views this agreement as a template for how rights holders and AI platforms can work together responsibly at scale.
Both leaders described the deal as a way to expand opportunities for fan expression while maintaining strong protections around safety, ownership, and brand integrity.
Disney Will Also Use OpenAI Technology
This is not just a licensing deal. Disney will also become a major OpenAI customer. The company plans to integrate OpenAI APIs into internal workflows, future Disney+ features, and new creative tools for employees. Disney will roll out ChatGPT internally as well.
The financial piece is significant too: Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and hold warrants to purchase more equity later, signaling a long-term commitment.
Responsible AI at the Core of the Agreement
Disney and OpenAI stressed that the partnership is built around responsible development. Both companies agreed to age-appropriate policies, protections for creator rights, strict adherence to ownership and likeness rules, and ongoing efforts to prevent harmful, misleading, or illegal content.
The agreement still needs final board approvals, but both companies expect it to move forward.

Characters Included in Sora and ChatGPT Images
Fans will have access to characters across Disney’s biggest franchises, including:
Disney & Pixar:
Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Simba, Mufasa, and characters from Frozen, Moana, Encanto, Inside Out, Toy Story, Up, Zootopia, and more.
Marvel:
Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor, Thanos.
Star Wars:
Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Leia, Han Solo, the Mandalorian, Yoda, Stormtroopers.
While not a full list, it gives a clear picture of the breadth of characters fans will be able to use.
My Thoughts
Since Bob Iger returned as CEO, Disney has made consistent investments in next-generation technology. Disney explored the metaverse through a partnership with Epic Games. They partnered with Apple on augmented reality experiences through Apple Vision. They worked with NVIDIA to push real-time graphics capabilities, which power attractions like Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
This new partnership with OpenAI continues that strategy. It shows that Disney wants to embrace how people create, share, and personalize content today.
From a marketing perspective, this deal is incredibly smart. Millions of people will create Sora videos featuring their favorite Disney characters and share them across social platforms. That’s organic reach Disney doesn’t have to pay for. As tools like Canva, CapCut, and now Sora become more accessible, everyday creators become a major distribution channel for Disney stories.
This partnership puts Disney characters directly into that creative ecosystem. It gives fans a new way to play, experiment, and engage—and Disney benefits every time someone posts their creation.
Disney is choosing to lead in this space, not wait from the sidelines. And as more people grow comfortable with AI tools, I expect other studios will follow. Disney just got there first in a meaningful way.
