Hey Universal Vacationers. Universal Creative just gave us something big—a first look inside Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment at Epic Universe. This is the next-level Universal attraction fans have been waiting for, and thanks to a new feature video, we’re getting our first glimpse inside the ride and even a sneak peek at the Monsters Unchained ride vehicle itself.
Inside the Monsters Unchained Attraction
The video introduces Brooke, a Senior Show Coordinator for Epic Universe, and takes us into Monsters Unchained. We get a look at the queue, the attraction’s elaborate sets, and even some outdoor scenes. If you love behind-the-scenes glimpses of how theme park magic is made, this is one you don’t want to miss.
But the real show-stealer? A brief but crucial look at the Monsters Unchained ride vehicle.

First Look at the Ride Vehicle
In the final moments of the video, we see Brooke stepping into what appears to be the ride vehicle. If you look closely, the design may look familiar—it strongly resembles the same ride system used in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. That’s right, it looks like Monsters Unchained will use a variation of the KUKA robotic arm ride system or also known as the KUKA Coaster.
The Patent That Backs It Up
A patent filed by Universal in 2021 gives us even more insight. Titled Support bar mounted system and method of minimum close indication for ride vehicle, this document describes an updated version of the KUKA arm ride system with a new restraint mechanism.
According to the patent, this restraint system eliminates the need for an indicator light, which is typically used to confirm when a rider is securely fastened. Instead, it allows for a streamlined, less restrictive experience that could work well for a more immersive, practical-effects-heavy attraction like Monsters Unchained.
One of the key details in the patent states:
“With most ride vehicles, a physical indicator can be easily mounted to a hood or ride vehicle floor, and/or mounted electrically, allowing a ride operator to determine if the passenger is properly restrained. However, for ride vehicles without a hood or ride vehicle floor, or for ride vehicles that minimize electrical connections, mounting a non-electrical minimum closed position indicator may be difficult, particularly if only a limited number of ride vehicle surfaces (e.g., seat back, seat pan, and/or restraint system) are available for mounting the indicator.”
What This Means for Monsters Unchained
If this ride system is indeed what we’ll see in Monsters Unchained, it marks a major shift from Forbidden Journey’s setup. The key difference? The absence of a hood or enclosing walls.
In Forbidden Journey, the enclosed ride vehicle directs your focus forward, blocking out peripheral distractions. That works great for screen-heavy scenes. But Monsters Unchained is all about physical sets and audio-animatronics, not screens. The lack of a hood means you’ll have an unobstructed view of the monsters, making them feel even closer.
How the Ride System Might Work
Universal hasn’t officially confirmed how the KUKA arm will be used in Monsters Unchained, but based on what we know, it’s likely to be used for:
- Bringing riders closer to (or farther from) the monsters for jump-scare moments.
- Simulating fast, sudden movements to mimic chase sequences.
- Tilting and rotating riders to create an unpredictable, horror-filled experience inside Castle Dracula.
This would be a game-changer for how Universal builds horror-based attractions. Instead of relying on screens, the ride could lean into practical effects, physical sets, and highly detailed animatronics—something we already got a taste of when Universal showcased some of the creatures set to appear in the ride.
When Does Monsters Unchained Open?
The wait won’t be long. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is set to open with Epic Universe on May 22, 2025.
Until then, we’ll be keeping an eye out for more details. But one thing’s clear: This ride is shaping up to be an absolute monster of an attraction.
